Guerrilla eMarketing Blog- February '09
I was suffering from a classic case of bloggers block when trying to narrow down what to write for my blog. So I took a walk the other day in Old Town to brainstorm and I saw a poster from beet STREET Fort Collins (http://www.beetstreet.org/) for a business conference that evening by Christine Comaford (http://www.mightyventures.com/) on “Rules for Renegades - how the Fort Collins model of small business innovation will save the national economy”. BINGO! I thought. My inspiration was right there, printed on a full color poster of all things (Ironic being that we offer large format printing services and all). I got back home, got ready in record time, grabbed a stack of my business cards and away I went to see if there was any tickets left and grabbed a seat. I was surrounded by business owners, aspiring inventors, marketing professionals, people from divisions of the large high tech companies, members of non-profit startups, manufacturing CEOs, people who took the long trek up from Denver, you name it.
I was so close I was getting so intoxicated off the fumes of the Sharpie Christine was using to emphasize her points about innovative ways to generate business revenue using technology and good old fashion business sense that something had to sink in. Here is a simple tip I learned from Christine Comaford at that seminar. When writing online content for an email blast, you should be sure to encompass all of these points- Teach, Tell, Touch, and Sell only through fostering interaction, authenticity and transparency for your company. When writing for social media such as Blogging, MySpace and Facebook, you need to write solely for Repoir, Trust, and building Credibility.
Afterwards, those in the VIP section (which of course, I lucked out in getting) where invited to go over to a reception hall for some networking, lite fare, and to get the latest book authored by the speaker, for free. I headed on over, got my book signed, listened to a bit of the post show speaker Q&A and popped a few canapés. Feeling pretty motivated, thumbing my business cards in my pocket like thumbing the gun trigger in the holster in those old cowboy movies, I was ready to do some full contact networking. “OK, go get ‘em”, I thought. I could do this, I’m a very social person, and there are plenty of people to mingle about and work some business networking magic with. But my legs wouldn’t go. No movement. Nothing. Hmm, maybe I’ll kind of ease on over to a small group and do the “happen to be standing next to them and pick up on the riveting conversation trick”, I thought. Nope. I couldn’t for the life of me casually move over to a group without looking out of place. “Fine. Then go jump in and start a conversation with another stag person”. The little marketer demon in my head was taunting me at this point. Nothing. I couldn’t come up with anyone or anything. Instead, I stood there, feeling completely helpless, lost in a sea of people without any lifepreserver. No wing man to save me. Nope. Just me. Standing there looking like a dork left alone eating my lunch on the first day of junior high at a new school. After five more grueling minutes, I left.
Was I simply self-defeated? No. Those of you who are in marketing and sales or other positions that are constantly in that hot seat advocating your business know that you do it and do it extremely well. It’s achieved with such a finess that comes naturally to you. But it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. You are skilled, and you know what you are doing. That’s why you are in your positions. That’s also why Think Big has a fantastic sales team whos jobs it is to get the word out letting everyone know everything about Think Big’s services (thankfully that isn’t up to me because as it’s painfully obvious how lackluster of a job I’d do. Whew). In contrast, it’s not all bad news for my career ego because luckily I found years ago that I do have a few skills. What I do know, and what my team at Think Big knows well , is how to create tools for business for everything from cutting edge marketing campaigns to intraweb and middleware using technologies such as .NET, Flash, eblasting, SMS, VDP, and web-to-print.
These technologies albeit are foreign language to most who don’t have pocket protectors. However, these all come second nature to computer nerds like me. I can relate to those who, although you know by now that you absolutely need to do it, you may be somewhat hesitant to embrace technology as an integral part of your marketing efforts or daily business needs because it may just not be within your comfort zone. That’s why I created this guerrilla marketing blog for 2009 to give back to all of you, our extended Think Big family by sharing my knowledge so that, together, we can create overcome painpoints and develop opportunities with technology to stay resiliant in today’s economy.
In my next blog- I will dig right in with demystifying how to best implement email based campaign technologies. Do you have a current technology issue you need help to research and discuss in the next blog? Big or small- post a comment and let me know!
